TASTING NOTES

A monovarietal Primitivo, with a dense, dark ruby hue with purple and garnet tones.

This stylish, characterful wine has an intense, full bouquet bursting with red fruits and cherry. In the mouth it is fruity and well-orchestrated with a slightly tart, lingering aftertaste, developing a velvety texture as it ages.

FOOD PAIRINGS

Contoured and fruity, it pairs well with more structured dishes, particularly roast and stewed meats and game. We recommend serving it with a board of local charcuterie such as Martina Franca Soppressata, and mature cheeses like Caciocavallo Silano D.O.P.

GRAPE VARIETY AND VINIFICATION

The Illyrians, an ancient Balkan people, introduced this variety to Puglia. It flourished here and was exported around the Mediterranean by the Phoenicians. Primitivo can be considered the direct descendent of the ancient Messapian “Mir”, the archetype for Puglian wine, which was praised by Horace.

While it shares its DNA with Zinfandel and Croatian Plavac Mali, Primitivo has achieved the finest results in Salento. Vineka’s Primitivo vines are espalier trained; following temperature-controlled maceration, this wine is aged in wood and steel.
